White Widow

Also known as: Black Widow, White Rhino
Medical Hybrid Hybrid THC 18% CBD 1%

There is simply no debating that White Widow is one of the most successful, well-loved, and influential weed strains of all time. Not of the last 10 years, OF ALL TIME.

Very few classic strains can handle the market pressure that has been heaped on by new-school offerings over the past 10 to 15 years (and especially in the last 5), but when we hear the words "White Widow", it is not the spider that pops to mind. It is not only an amazing strain in its own right but also a genetic contributor to potentially more than 30% of modern hybrids.

Lauded by recreational enthusiasts and medical patients in equal measures, White Widow changed the game, no two ways about it. An iconic, seminal, and historic weed strain, it represents that rarest of combinations - a strain that everyone agrees is a banger, but for a range of different reasons.

So, what is it that made White Widow transcend its generations?

  • The Look - Before the early 1990s, weed looked different to today, especially those top-shelf, frosty buds we are now blessed with. But White Widow? These oversized, resin-oozing colas were simply in a league of their own and can still stand up against the strongest contenders today, at least in terms of aesthetics.
  • The Genetics - White Widow is one of the few strains still with us whose genetic background is 100% landrace. Bred from a cross of a Brazilian Sativa and a South Indian Indica, this is about as close as you can get to a "landrace hybrid". The result is an amazingly well-balanced 60/40 Indica-Sativa split that offers the best of both worlds.
  • The Effects - That balance shines on through to the panel of effects. A crowd pleaser if there ever was one, White Widow gives a well-rounded and all-encompassing high. The initial uplifting, heady high gives way (after 30 or so minutes) to a deeply relaxing and overly sedative finish. This comprehensive high is one of the reasons that White Widow has been so useful in creating new strains, (as well as the big yields).
  • The Taste - White Widow's flavour profile might not stack up against the big names of today, but it does offer a super interesting insight into the history of modern cannabis and is a very enjoyable smoke. It is spicy and earthy, herbal and piney, with a soft base of berries that beautifully complements the more savoury overtones.
